Betty Boop™ Series Part Two: Betty's Rags To Riches Story

Take a step into the time machine with me and head back to 1930. The Roaring Twenties may have ended but many of the trends were still going strong, like the popularity of jazz music and the fashion styling of the flappers. Picture shorter hemlines, bobbed haircuts, and sassy independent attitudes (all fads that are in vogue today!).

The pretty, wide-eyed girl we're familiar with made her debut into this scene as…a dog! Yes, that's right. Betty's creators, Fleischer Studios, already had a headlining star for their Talkartoon series. Betty, who didn't have a name yet, was simply introduced as a companion for Bimbo. She may have had a dog nose and floppy dog ears but her curvy feminine appeal could not be denied. This dog-like character made several more appearances as Bimbo's girlfriend, evolving a little more each time.

By the time of her appearance in "Any Rags" in January 1932, Betty had ditched the dog nose and turned her long ears into the classy hoops. Plus, she was finally properly named. And is it any wonder that Betty's baby face and womanly charms made her more popular than Bimbo? (We'll see what happens to Bimbo in the next post.) The rising starlet was given her own cartoon film series in August of 1932 that ran for seven years! She also had her own comic strip, which centered around adventures as an actress.

Boop-mania was in full swing by 1934 with Boop memorabilia appearing in stores. You could find her image on things like tea sets, cards, watches and more. You can still find some of these vintage pieces if you search hard enough. I like our modern Betty roses wristwatch which is perfect for everyone from teens to grandmothers who like to Boop-Oop-A-Doop!

Betty has come a long way from her humble beginnings. Carry around this rich-looking Betty Boop bag and be inspired to start your own rags-to-riches story!
