Good Times Ahead

Talking about the bridal shower last week got me thinking about another very important wedding related event. The bachelorette party! Ranging anywhere from mild to wild, it gives all the ladies (especially the bride) a chance to let their hair down. If you find yourself in charge of planning a bachelorette party, here are a few ideas to get you started.

Set up a margarita station around this margarita accent lamp. Like moths to a flame, guests will gather around the glow to gossip and drink. Serve up southwestern-style margaritas that'll knock them off their feet (in a good way). The Great Margarita Book has 85 tantalizing recipes to choose from. You can't go wrong!

Once everyone's had a chance to wet their whistles, break out the Naughty Charades. You and your friends will be doubled over in laughter at the sight of each other acting out racy slang terms like Booty Call, Bump and Grind, or Bun in the Oven.

And what's a bachelorette party without naughty gifts to make the bride-to-be blush? See how she reacts to laugh-out-loud items like flavored body pens, the candy bra and g-string (no longer an innocent treat from our childhood!) or the barely there naughty knot lingerie. Tell you what, the bride's cheeks will definitely flush when she's hanging upside down from her new stripper pole that comes with a DVD to show you how to pole dance like a pro. Guaranteed to be THE gift of the evening!

Just remember…what happens at the party, stays at the party.

Bridal Shower Solutions

I received a call a few days ago from a friend. She's her cousin's matron of honor and the cousin was starting to become a little too particular over the details of the bridal shower (of all things!).

They had all the main details hammered out, but my friend wanted to hear if I had any suggestions to add. (I'm kind of known for being the go-to gal for party and gift ideas, you know). As she was describing the menu to me, I immediately thought of several recommendations. Since she's planning on having several different types of finger foods, I told her about our gourmet bowl makers. You can make all kinds of edible bowls with these molds. I told her to try serving shrimp cocktail in a frozen ice ring. It looks so classy! Another favorite of mine is the berry-filled shortcake with a scoop of ice cream on top! Yummmmmmm.

Instead of a traditional cake for dessert, she was thinking cupcakes, an idea that I am in love with. I'm going to loan her my copy of "Hello, Cupcake!" which has the neatest and most adorable cupcakes recipes. And they're actually pretty simple to make, something I really appreciate given how clumsy I can be when I attempt to actually USE my kitchen.

On the practical side, I suggested a dessert tower to display the cupcakes. And, since they'll be eating outdoors, enjoying the view from my friend's waterfront home, a salad bar like this one would be really useful. It'll blend in with the surrounding decorations and keep the food chilled.

Have fun ladies…

A Salute To Dads

Father's Day…24 hours for dads to kick up their feet, set aside the "honey-do" list, and be waited on hand and foot. Well, in theory, anyway. Here's a quick gift guide to get the dads in your life properly outfitted for their special day.

For the new dads: Handling dirty diapers, teething, and other growing pains is hard work but they know it's worth it. Cause yep, that kid is a chip off the old block. Give him the chance to humbly boast about his genes with the cute Me and Mini Me shirts.

For the outdoorsy, BBQ-loving dads: They feel most at home in front of the grill, carefully crafting the perfect steak or rack of ribs. The Griller apron has front pockets to store his latest grilling gadgets and, for Father's Day at least, he can point to his chest ("If you can't stand the heat, go get me a beer") anytime he needs someone to bring him another brewski.

For the tool-loving dad: Whether he's made it his fortress of solitude, a guy's only hangout, or just spends a lot of time tinkering with his toys, he'll appreciate the Garage Time t-shirt. He can slip it on to let everyone know he's ready for a little "me-time."

For the "man's man" type of dad: You know, the type of guy who scorns the very idea of a band-aid. He may seem like a tough cookie on the outside, but actually has a big soft heart (especially for his children) on the inside. A John Wayne coffee mug shows that a man's got to do what a man's got to do!

For any dad who secretly pictures himself saving the day (cape and tights optional), the Super Dad t-shirt will make him puff out his chest with pride!

A Star In The Making

I was ready for my close-up…though I never got it. About a month ago, thanks to a friend of mine, I had the really neat experience of being an extra for an independent movie that was filmed in the area. I was amazed at how long it takes to shoot just one scene! I'm not sure if I'll actually end up seeing myself on the big screen, but every celebrity has to start somewhere, right?

Even a household name like fitness personality Richard Simmons, who's still going strong after twenty years, caught his big media break with an appearance on a reality TV show! And this was long before the likes of The Real World or Survivor series. That appearance helped him land a role on General Hospital and from there…the world! Relive the Sweatin' to the Oldies era with his 5-DVD anniversary set that'll get you movin' and shakin' to some fun tunes while listening to Richard's inspiring banter.

Television also has the ability to create "stars" out of products, such as the As Seen On TV items. I've already mentioned the produce-prolonging merits of Debbie Meyer Green Bags™ in a previous post. And we just added the Debbie Meyer Cheese and Cold Cut Bags™. It really is amazing how these bags keep food fresh and edible — long after you'd normally throw that unrecognizable science project in the fridge away!

I'll let you in a secret. I don't have a green thumb. If anything, I have a brown thumb, because that's what color my plants turn despite my best efforts. My biggest problem is that I forget to water them completely. Or I overcompensate and drown them. Aqua Globes™ should save my plants from further torture. Plus, I like how the hand blown colored glass fits in with the other stuff around my house.

Oh, but this is just a taste of what we offer. If you do a search for "As Seen On TV" from The Lighter Side home page, you'll find much more, like foot pads that draw toxins out of your body or putty that can seal leaks instantly.

Remember, Reflect and Honor

I know many people are looking forward to Memorial Day weekend (myself included), but did you know Armed Forces Day is this Saturday the 17th? it's a day dedicated to the men and women who serve in the military. Just thinking about all the people who have pledged to protect our country has me feeling very proud and thankful, especially as I think of the potential danger they live with day in and out. Our patriotic guardian angel throw can be a source of comfort for family members of servicemen and women who are currently serving overseas.

But there's no need to wait to show your appreciation. You can do it anytime. Our sharp-looking Army, Marines, Air Force, and Navy t-shirts, sure to catch anyone's eye, are a great way to show support ANY day of the year! I gave one to a friend of mine who is a retired Marine and he loves wearing it when he goes out and about.

Memorial Day tends to signal the start of many summer weekend BBQs. Sometimes seating runs unexpectedly short, so it's always handy to have a chair of your own on hand! Keep one of our Army or Marines fold-up chairs in your trunk and you'll never be without a patriotic place to sit. They're also a thoughtful (and very useful) gift for veterans!

On a slightly more serious note, while Memorial Day is a day of family gatherings and picnics, it's also a day of remembrance for those who died in our nation's service. A special and unique way to honor a family member or friend who gave the ultimate sacrifice is with the comforting sounds made by a memorial wind chime. The pewter chime clapper can be personalized for a beautiful and sentimental tribute.

Spring Sports Roundup

I'm planning on attending a Tampa Bay Rays game this weekend and have "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" stuck in my head. The Lighter Side® has been located in Bradenton, Florida since 1986. One of the perks of living in this area, aside from the (usually) nice weather, is that many major league baseball teams come down here for spring training during the winter. Currently the Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds call the local area home for spring training, with the New York Yankees a straight shot up the road. Though I hear the 2007 World Champion Boston Red Sox are exploring the idea of moving their spring training operations from Fort Myers to Sarasota!

Red Sox fans should check out our 2007 World Series baseball. It's "autographed" with the replicated signatures of the Boston Red Sox players from that winning team. The 2008 MLB® team baseballs are similar in that they feature the simulated autographs of the current team roster and are neat, affordable collectibles.

For die-hard fans that dream of being part of the team, our Major League Baseball art print helps fuel their fantasy. Personalized for free, they'll get to see their name on one of the jerseys hanging among the other players' in the team's locker room. Just choose their favorite team!

The nice weather we're enjoying also means more opportunities for other outdoor sports, like golfing. My brother is such an avid golfer. In fact, I'm sure he's out on the greens now, putting away. I like to tee up with him every now and then. It's led to many hilarious brother/sister bonding moments. One time, when he wasn't looking, I switched out his regulation ball with this trick golf ball. If you could have seen his face when I used the remote to make the ball spin in place on the tee — right as he swung back to drive! I was banned from golfing with him for awhile, but it was totally worth it. It's a favorite story of mine to bring up at family gatherings!

Pomp And Circumstance

Ah, the spring air brings to mind blooming flowers, spring showers…and graduation ceremonies. My high school ceremony was held in a hot gymnasium (before the modern days of A/C) while my college graduation ceremony was held outdoors. Fortunately, it was a nice day with no rain in sight. Though the graduating class walked away with diplomas and scorching sunburns! With both high school and college graduations looming, I wanted to share my picks of gifts for the soon-to-be graduate in your life.

My first pick may surprise you, but it is just so cool. It's a "101 Things To Do With Ramen Noodles" recipe book. I lived on ramen and mac & cheese while I hit the books and pulled all-nighters, so this book is perfect for college-bound students as well as recent college grads suddenly finding themselves out in the "real world." Prepare to be amazed at what delicious meals they can easily (and cheaply) make with the simple ramen noodle!

My next three picks are each personalized mementos of this special life event. There is the adorable plush bear in his graduation cap and gown that will bear (how could I not throw that pun in there?) the graduate's first name and year. The graduation pillow and throw can be personalized with the graduate's full name, year of graduation, and name of school. Pillow and throw will come in handy for those power naps between college classes!

It doesn't matter if they graduated from public, private or Ivy-league schools. You can still tease the new grad's sense of achievement with the tongue-in-cheek Paper or Plastic T-shirt. They'll need a good sense of humor out there in that crazy world of ours!
